A clogged dryer vent will cause reduced airflow through the vent and the dryer motor has to work harder, causing it to overheat. If enough heat is generated, it can cause the lint and surrounding combustible items to ignite. A fire has stared.

Dryer vent length and the number of 90 degree bends in the vent also contributes to the frequency of it needing cleaned. A good indication that your dryer vent needs cleaned is when normal loads of laundry are taking more than 40-60 minutes to dry.
